The family members of the deceased must inform of the death in the area of Municipality of Ljubljana (MOL) to the competent authority, which performs a post mortem inspection in the area, that is the Institute of Forensic Medicine, Korytkova 2, 1000 Ljubljana (telephone: 01 524 49 51). The coroner performs the post mortem inspection and issues the necessary documentation – a certificate of the post mortem inspection. When the coroner finishes the post mortem inspection, the family must call Žale, Javno podjetje d. o. o. (telephone: 01 420 17 50) and arrange the transport of the deceased. info@zale.si.Upon notification (by a telegram, e-mail, telephone call) of the occurrence of death in hospitals or elderly homes, the family members must claim all the belongings of the deceased at the clinic, where the patient was admitted. Insofar the deceased passed away at a retirement home, the family members must claim the belongings at management of the retirement home. The notification to the family members always notes where the body of the deceased is currently located. In the area of the Municipality of Ljubljana according to the Decree on funeral and burial activities all deceased that pass away in the area of MOL are transported for burial to Žale, Ljubljana. When the deceased is at Žale (information service by phone: 01 420 17 00), the family members can schedule the funeral, cremation, transport to another location, and everything else at one place, that is the seat of Žale, Javno podjetje d. o. o., Med hmeljniki 2, Ljubljana (Plečnik’s Žale) – reception office. In the event of death outside of MOL jurisdiction, family members arrange all matters concerning the scheduling of a funeral as described under first two paragraphs – death at home or health organization.

• Identification document of the deceased (identity card, passport, driver’s license);
• Number of the grave location, where the funeral will take place or assignment of a new grave plot;
• Certificate of the post mortem inspection if death occurred at home;
• Certificate of the cemetery manager for urn funerals, whether the deceased will be cremated and the urn buried at a cemetery that is not under Žale d. o. o. management;
• For transport abroad a passport is required, whereas Žale d. o. o. provides a post mortem passport and international death certificates.

Deceased planned for cremation should be dressed in cremation clothes, which are made of ecological materials and do not produce harmful emissions to the environment upon cremation, the family members need not bring clothes for the deceased. Family members are advised to discuss all matters prior to arranging a funeral, especially on the type of funeral or burial they wish to have (urn or coffin), whether there will be a religious representative present at the funeral or not. We suggest that family mambers coordinate desires on the time and place of the funeral and prepare a text for the orbituary. Family members that desire a funeral with a representative of a religous community (priest) must arrange this in the parish, where the deceased had his/her permanent place of residence. This order is placed after the funeral arrangement at Žale. In connection with various societies (singers, bands, fire departments, ZB NOV, etc.), these arrangements are in the sole hands of the funeral subscriber.
 

Upon scheduling a funeral you can arrange and order the following services:

• Selection of funeral equipment (coffin, urn, decorative urn, urn niches, etc.);
• Ordering of wreaths, mourning bouquets, photography, filming of the funeral;
• Allocation of the grave plot and conclusion of a lease contract;
• Gardening arrangement of the grave prior and after the burial;
• Stonecutting arrangement of the grave (lifting of the edging stones and headstone, insertion of the urn niche, inscription on the headstone);
• Transport of the deceased to another location in Slovenia or abroad;
• Announcement of orbituaries (Delo, Dnevnik, Večer, RTV …);
• Speaker for the funeral oration;
• Arrangement of the transcription from the register of the deceased – within 30 days, delivery to home.
• Choir and solo singing and instrument playing at the funeral ceremony
